Sarina Jain wants you to get healthy and get moving! Jain is the founder of The Masala Bhangra Workout, an Indian dance based fitness program that features high energy Bhangra and Bollywood dance movements that are getting people from all over the world losing weight while experiencing a bit of Indian culture. Jain is a trailblazer in the fitness world. After losing her father in 1994 to a massive cardiac arrest, Jain became inspired to create a full body fitness program geared towards Indians. She created The Masala Bhangra Workout in 1998, starting off in her garage and soon teaching classes, eventually landing a show on Discovery Communication’s FitTV. The workout popularity exploded and Jain found herself on the “Today Show” and “Access Hollywood” spreading her love of Bhangra and fitness. Fans of her workout swear she will get you sweating, dancing, and screaming ‘Balle Balle!’ And Jain is headed north, to our country. Ask her about the benefits of dancing, she says, “Dancing is beneficial is so many ways. It opens up your heart. It makes you sweat. Dance let’s you let your body loose, allows you to be free and to express oneself with their body and heart. Also, dance let’s your brain think another way and allows you to be creative! But you get to loose weight!” Sarina was born and raised in the U.S. to Indian parents that migrated to the States in the 70′s. “Both Mom and Dad wanted to make sure that we kids would grow up with the best of what the West has to offer without forgetting the East. Dad made sure to send us to India every summer to spend time with our families, including our grandparents, and learn to appreciate what the Indian culture is all about. My father was our rock. He was this man that was our friend, yet protector. Dad would always tell us to be proud to be who you are and to respect the culture you come from and to stand on our own feet. Dad was a very proud Indian man living in the U.S. One day, Mom called to say he is not breathing anymore. My father passed away to a massive cardiac arrest at the age of 47. So, to honour him and his existence and everything he told us to be proud of, I created Masala Bhangra. I wanted to tell him that not only am I proud to be an Indian woman living in the U.S. but now I teach aspects of our culture through fitness.” Bollywood and Bhangra dancing are popular these days in the mainstream market. “I just happen to take what we love from Bollywood movies and put a name to it. This has made it easy for people to follow along and learn something. I am the pioneer of bringing Indian dance to the U.S. fitness industry at a global level and the doors have opened up for this idea to become popular. I am proud of this. It is our culture that people are getting down to and losing weight at the same time. How amazing is that!”
