Toronto: Legendary vocalist, Pandit Jasraj, was in Toronto to perform at a unique concert at the Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation in Etobicoke.The concert featuring “Three Generations of the Mewati Gharana” presented Dr. Amit Arya, Artistic Director of the Pandit Jasraj Institute of Music in Toronto as the introductory artist, followed by “Acharya Shiromani” Pandita Tripti Mukherjee. The highlight of the evening was Pandit Jasraj who held the audience spellbound on May 5 with his renderings of Hindustani vocal music.
“I am always pleased to come to Toronto,” he said when presented a bouquet of flowers by India’s Consul General Preeti Saran that he gifted right back to her. “This concert has only been possible because of Dr. Arya who has set up the Mewati Gharana in Toronto.”
Born in Hissar in Northern India, Pandit Jasraj enchanted the audience with Hindustani classical, devotional and Haveli Sangeet music singing favourites like Hanuman Stuti Bhajan Hanuman Lala Mere Pyare Lala.
The celebrated legend was accompanied on stage by Pandita Mukherjee and Dr. Arya. He provided the audience with a lyrical quality considered the essence of the Mewati style of singing.
“The learning continues throughout your life,” said Pandita Mukherjee. “I have been studying and singing in this Gharana from a very early age and feel very blessed.”
The artists were accompanied on stage by Shri Aditya Narayan Banerjee and Shri Hindole Majumdar on the tabla and Shri Parag Marathe and Dr. Neelesh Nadkarni on harmonium.
