Pearson Airport Link To Be Complete By 2015

Pearson Airport Link To Be Complete By 2015Toronto: Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty recently confirmed that the construction along the new link between Pearson International Airport and Union Station is off to a strong start so that it will be in service for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games.

The Air Rail Link will operate on a 25-kilometre rail route, connecting the busiest airport in Canada with the busiest transit and passenger rail hub in the country.

The link will share the upgraded GO Transit rail corridor along the Kitchener line (formerly the Georgetown line). Construction is well underway on a new three-kilometre extension connecting the Kitchener line to Toronto Pearson Terminal 1. The extension’s construction is creating and supporting more than 1,200 jobs.

The Air Rail Link will remove 1.2 million car trips from Ontario roads in its first year of operation alone.

“Even in a tough global economy, we’re moving ahead with vital infrastructure because it creates jobs for families today and strengthens our economy for the long-term. It just makes sense to provide efficient, convenient transportation between Canada’s busiest airport and Union Station — and we’re pleased to see that the project is off to a strong start so that we’ll be moving those people in time for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games,” said Dalton McGuinty
Premier of Ontario

More than five million people travel between downtown Toronto and Pearson International Airport and that number is expected to reach nine million by 2020.

Metrolinx will build, own and operate the Air Rail Link. It has purchased 18 Diesel Multiple Units from Sumitomo Corporation of America — a critical step in ensuring the link is running in time for the Pan/Parapan Am Games in 2015. These diesel vehicles are the cleanest available and will be convertible to electric.

• When completed, travel time between Union Station and Pearson will be approximately 25 minutes. Trains are expected to depart Union Station and Toronto Pearson every 15 minutes and will make stops at Bloor and Weston GO Transit Stations.
