UW Peel Campaign Sets $12.8 Million Target

UW Peel Campaign Sets $12.8 Million TargetMississauga: United Way of Peel Region’s CEO Shelley White and Medtronic of Canada’s Neil Fraser, Chair of United Way’s 2012 Campaign Cabinet, announced a fundraising goal of $12.8-million on Thursday.

The announcement was made at the campaign kickoff at the Empire Studios 10 in Mississauga. United Way’s Lights! Camera! United in Action! film event drew hundreds of community members, community leaders and teams from the business, government and non-profit sectors.

“It is my privilege to serve as the 2012 United Way Campaign Chair, and galvanize awareness and raise funds to help the people of Peel,” says Fraser. “The tough, economic times have been challenging – especially for families, children and individuals. The work of the United Way is more essential than ever to help build strong, healthy communities – and inspire kids to be all they can be. Every contribution: of money, volunteering or action has impact to improve social conditions, and lift people from poverty and create a better place in Peel for all.”

“Our region faces complex challenges and everything we do is about giving people the opportunities and supports they need to build a better life,” says White. “Social and health service issues facing our community require more than one answer. At United Way we continually review the needs of the entire community and then develop, identify and fund a wide range of immediate and longer-term local solutions. But we can’t do it alone. This needs to be a community effort.”

White and Fraser encouraged everyone across Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga to join United Way by giving, volunteering and acting at a time when many families, friends, neighbours and colleagues are feeling the effects of the fragile economy.

The event featured a series of short digital videos that shed light on the critical challenges facing so many Peel residents and on United Way’s collective efforts to move people from poverty to possibility, build healthy people and strong communities, and help kids be all they can be. The feature presentation, “The Door”, was directed and produced by recent Sheridan College graduates Anand Chandy and Amanda Secord.
