Chinese Student Saves Man From Train, May Lose Legs

Chinese Student Saves Man From Train, May Lose LegsBeijing: A 20-year-old student in China’s Hebei province may lose both his legs, crushed by a train, following his heroic attempt to save a man attempting suicide on the railway tracks.

On the evening of July 9, Li Boya, a summer intern at the city’s Changli railway station, noticed a man jumping onto the tracks seconds before a train would arrive. He ran to pull the man up from the track. Though the train made an emergency stop, it ran over Li, severing his right foot and his left leg below the knee, China Daily reported Monday.
Li’s lower left leg was amputated and his right foot damaged. Doctors are hopeful the right leg can be saved and have transplanted his left foot to the right leg so he will only need one artificial leg in the future. He is in stable condition at Qinhuangdao city’s Second Hospital. “He is under close monitoring,” said Zhang Xu, director of hand and foot surgery at the hospital.
The Beijing railway police authority has rewarded Li 200,000 yuan ($31,700) for his heroic act and promised him a job on completion of his studies. He is all set to advance to second year soon at the Railway Police College.
According to a report by Beijing News, when Li’s mother asked him if he regretted what he did, he responded he would still try to save others in similar circumstances.
