Peel Region– Peel Regional Police will be hosting a Gun Amnesty program for the month of May, 2019.
The Gun Amnesty program is for any resident in the Region of Peel who wishes to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition for destruction.
This Amnesty is an opportunity for members of the community to safely surrender weapons and therefore contribute to the enhancement of public safety.
During this period of the Amnesty Program, police will not be recommending weapons-related Criminal Code charges that would otherwise apply to the people turning in these items.
It is important to understand however, that there is no amnesty offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime. No anonymous submissions will be accepted.
In April of 2018, Peel Regional Police conducted a similar Gun Amnesty Program. As a testament to its success, Peel Regional Police would like the public to know that upon making visits to 21 homes during the Gun Amnesty Program, 34 firearms, 8 edged weapons and 80 pounds of ammunition were safely turned in by residents of the Region of Peel.
Members of the public residing in the Region of Peel who wish to participate in this program are directed to contact the Peel Regional Police Amnesty Hotline, starting Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 905-872-3064. For firearms outside of the Region of Peel, members of the public are to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 to make arrangements for a safe pick up of their firearms and/or ammunition.
Please do not bring these items to a police facility.
Anyone with information related to illegal firearms can contact Vice, Narcotics and Street Level Organized Crime at (905) 453-2121, ext. 7704. Information may also be left anonymously by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by visiting peelcrimestoppers.ca.
