BRAMPTON, ON (April 17, 2020) – As a result of extended facility closures and programming cancellations in response to COVID-19, the City of Brampton has made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend employment of approximately 2,000 part-time, temporary/casual, and seasonal staff members in non-essential and non-critical services effective April 18, 2020.
This is a temporary measure and the City hopes to have these employees return to the City as soon as we are able to resume the various programs and services.
In the interim, the City remains committed to providing support services to impacted employees and anticipates that many will be eligible for financial support from the Government of Canada’s benefits programs.
Earlier this week, with guidance from the Brampton Emergency Management Office and Peel Public Health, the City announced that all City festivals, events, performances and community event permits for events at City facilities and performing arts centres, are cancelled until July 1, 2020, inclusive. This follows the March 27, 2020, announcement that City Hall and all other City of Brampton facilities would remain closed until further notice to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The City will continue to deliver essential and critical services including: Fire and Emergency Services, Transit, Animal Services, Works Operation and Maintenance, Parks and Forestry Operations, Security Services, Site Plan Applications, Building Permits/Inspections, Official Plan Amendments (OPAs) and Rezoning Planning Applications, 311 and Administrative/Technical functions.

“Like many organizations across the country, we are actively responding to and mitigating the various impacts of this crisis. We remain committed to ensuring staff have access to the support services they need during this time. I would also like to assure everyone that this difficult decision is a direct result of closures and cancellations in response to COVID-19 and does not reflect the contributions of impacted employees who remain a valued part of our team.”
– David Barrick, Chief Administrative Officer, City of Brampton
