OTTAWA: Every year on May 16th, the International Day of Light celebration brings together a global community of partners in a wide range of local events and activities to raise awareness about the many ways in which light plays a central role in today’s world.
The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP)’s International Day of Light (IDL) Organizing Committee will be contributing to this year’s festivities on a national scale with outreach and educational activities targeted specifically for Canadian youth throughout the month of May.
IDL Canada’s campaign for the appreciation of light in science, culture and art, education and sustainable development is dedicated to uniting and inspiring participants all around Canada to acknowledge the grand impacts of light in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, entertainment, and research.
IDL Canada will be promoting light during May 2021 through videos from leading scientists and researchers, DIY at-home experiments, special content and videos about the use of light in astronomy and various optics phenomena and much more! Material will cater to students at all levels of education, ranging from elementary school all the way to university, and will be shared on our social media platforms: @IDLCanada – on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok #IDL2021, #IDLCanada, #LightDay2021 and #CAPhys In addition to the month-long celebration of light over social media, IDL Canada will be participating in Youth Science Canada’s STEM Expo held concurrently with the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) from May 19-21.
IDL Canada’s virtual exhibit will feature content highlighting the use of light in modern science, the integration of light in art and culture, light in the world around is, and various demonstrations, interactive simulations, and at-home experiment ideas.
Content will be shared in both of our national languages. A live session will also take place, encouraging students to engage with optical scientists!
During a time of global crises such as the coronavirus pandemic, events celebrating universal phenomena such as light demonstrate all of the ways in which our global community is connected through our accomplishments in a huge range of disciplines. The

The committee is inviting the general public and all young, inspired minds, to join us in affirming the importance of light, how it has led to the advancements of modern technology, media and science, and how it can be used to create an even better world for future generations.
The IDL is celebrated worldwide including more than 20 different countries with enthusiastic support from Nobel laureates, and Presidents and CEOs of major scientific bodies.
