TORONTO: The importance of organ donations and related issues were the highlights of speeches at a conference organized by the Trillium Gift of Life Network in Toronto on Friday.
More than 400 nurses dealing with critical care in hospitals across Ontario attended the whole-day conference “Reaching New Heights: Saving More Lives” at Delta Hotels Toronto East.
Scholars/leaders from different faith groups, Dr. Moira McQueen (Christian), Dr. Devendra Mishra (Hindu), Imam Shaykh Yusuf Badat (Islamic) and Rabbi Dr. Geoffrey Haber (Jewish) participated in an enlightening panel discussion about religious perspectives regarding organ donation.
The aim of the Conference was to educate and enhance general awareness about religious implications about this worthy cause.
Professor Devendra Mishra explained how the body was a mere composition of elements while the soul represents the essential human being. In this regard, the Hindus generally are willing to donate organs and their bodies because they believe that the body is only a temporary repository for the soul.
“It was a very fascinating discussion and the audience listened in rapt attention,” Prof Mishra said.
