Help Support One of the Community’s Most Vulnerable Populations
Toronto, ON: The Safehaven Project for Community Living puts exceptional service at the heart of all its programming, advocacy and initiatives. Safehaven’s clients are children with complex care needs, which can include a combination of multiple chronic conditions, functional and cognitive impairments, mental health challenges and social vulnerability. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Safehaven is focused on ensuring their clients remain connected to the broader community and have developed a series of volunteer opportunities for the general public to support some of the most vulnerable in the Greater Toronto Area.
Safehaven is committed to providing the highest quality care and is continuously looking for innovative ways to address the gaps in community-based care for individuals with medically complex needs, with belongingness and inclusivity being at the core of all their messaging and actions. As a leader in the Developmental Sector, Safehaven believes community engagement and volunteerism is paramount to furthering their mission and ensuring their clients and their families can continue to feel like they are important members of the community, especially under the current circumstances.
With National Volunteer Week just around the corner, there are many opportunities to support Safehaven in fun and flexible ways while respecting social distancing expectations. The people of the Greater Toronto Area can ensure individuals living with medical complexities feel like part of the community by answering Safehaven’s calls to action. You can:
Create a fun and engaging video that Safehaven can share with their clients to keep them engaged as an integral part of the community. Make a TikTok video, share words of inspiration, read a story, sing songs, highlight your talents, etc. 2. Colour your driveways and sidewalks in support of Safehaven and use the hashtags #havenathome, #safehaven and #ProtectTheVulnerable. Don’t forget to post on social media and tag us (@safehavento). Share words of inspiration, draw a picture, create a mosaic and let Safehaven’s clients know you are thinking of them. 3. Make a financial donation to Safehaven and help them invest in critical supplies and equipment needed to navigate through COVID-19. Give what you can – whether it’s $5, $50 or $500, your support will enable Safehaven to continue delivering high quality care for this vulnerable population, ensure staff are protected and will even allow clients to stay connected with their families and broader community through the use of technology. 4. Become a champion for Safehaven by raising awareness in your community. You can support
Safehaven by nominating their Essential Service workers for community recognitions or advancing their great work to representatives in the community.
