AJAX, Ont. _ Police say two men suspected of being responsible for a series of carjackings and robberies in a community east of Toronto are facing a total of 66 charges.
At a news conference, Friday in Ajax, Ont., Durham regional police chief Paul Martin says the two men, who are brothers in their early 20s, were charged in connection with three carjackings and four robberies where people were either inside or near their cars.
Martin says the “crime spree” began on Oct. 12 with a carjacking on a residential driveway and ended when an arrest was made Tuesday after a robbery involving a taxi driver near the Ajax Downs casino.
Police say fingerprints taken at the last robbery connected the accused to the other carjackings and robberies being investigated.
In several incidents, police say the victims were forced to drive to a bank and withdraw some cash before the suspects let them out of the car and drove off.
Ajax Mayor Steve Parish says the string of robberies had residents on edge and fearing for their safety.
“I understand, of course, that there is much more police work that needs to happen on this, but you can be assured that there is a community that is feeling much better and much safer,” Parish said Friday.
