The City of Mississauga and tens of thousands of Bianca Andreescu fans celebrated the Canadian tennis star with a She The North rally at Mississauga Celebration Square this afternoon.

To recognize Andreescu’s accomplishments, the Mayor presented her with a Key to the City and announced that a street in Mississauga will be named in her honour – Andreescu Way.

“The City of Mississauga, its residents and all of Canada are so incredibly proud of our local hometown champion, Bianca Andreescu,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Presenting her with the City’s highest honour is our way of saying thank you on behalf of all Mississauga residents. She has inspired young athletes to play tennis or chase their dreams and has done so with such determination, grace and humility. She is an inspiration to young women across the country and is proof that you can achieve anything if you work hard and put your mind to it.”

Andreescu jumped to 5th in the world standings after winning the U.S. Open last weekend.

“With all eyes set on Andreescu’s meteoric rise through the ranks over the past year, the sport continues to grow rapidly across Canada. Tennis Canada has helped Bianca but so have many others along her amazing journey, including her incredible parents,” said Michael Downey, Chief Executive Officer of Tennis Canada. “What is most important is not what we have done for her but how Bianca is helping grow our sport in Canada both on and off-court. She is truly inspiring the next generation of tennis players to pick up a racquet.”

Andreescu has been a resident, student and athlete in Mississauga and began her career at Mississauga’s Ontario Racquet Club.

“In the days since Bianca’s historic win at the US Open, the Ontario Racquet Club has seen an incredible outpouring of excitement from our tennis juniors,” said Paul Morrell, Chief Operating Officer of Ontario Racquet Club. “While her achievement means a lot to Canadians everywhere, we see this nowhere more than in the hearts of young aspiring players as they strive to follow in her footsteps.  Thank you, Bianca, for being a fierce competitor, an amazing role model and a true champion.”
