SEPTEMBER 11, MISSISSAUGA – Mississauga residents joined MPP Deepak Anand on Wednesday, September 4, at Victory Hall in Malton for a townhall meeting to discuss what matters most to them.
MPP Anand provided an update from Queen’s Park, including the extended GO train services to and from Malton GO station, the recent funding announcement for 677 new beds for long-term care homes in Mississauga, and the $667,000 received from the Ministry of Agriculture by Mississauga’s Business Improvement Areas, including the Malton BIA, for beautification and revitalization of community spaces. MPP Anand also announced his recent appointment as Special Advisor to the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.
MPP Anand then spoke about projects undertaken and events organized in the riding over the last few months including the Community Clean-up Days, Blood Drive, the Full STEM Ahead workshop for young children, Remarkable Citizens Awards etc. In regards to the continued effort to keep the area around the Malton Walmart free of litter and other debris, the MPP mentioned that plaza management has made a commitment to have a weekly clean-up team assigned to the area starting the week of September 9.
When the floor was opened to the residents, they raised fears about the safety of the neighborhoods in Malton, especially since the closing down of the local community police station. There was great concern about the lack of enforcement of city by-laws and the cleanliness of the neighborhood. Residents also decried the lack of a Service Ontario in Malton, an area with approximately 40,000 people that is predominantly occupied by new immigrants, who need easy access to a Service Ontario.
Representatives from Peel Regional Police Division 21 were present to provide information and updates on issues of importance to residents of the riding and answer questions regarding the closure of the Malton community police station and the changes made in the policing and patrolling of the area since then.
MPP Anand and his team would like to thank all those who attended the meeting. The next townhall is scheduled for November 8 at Frank McKechnie Community Centre (310 Bristol Rd E, Mississauga, ON L4Z 3V5). All constituents are invited to share their concerns and partake in discussions on solutions.
