GUELPH: Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph, on behalf of the Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, has announced $100,000 in funding to the University of Guelph to install 20 Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers to provide students, employees, and residents with more green options to charge their vehicles where they live, work, and play.
The new chargers will be added to the existing 25 Level 2 EV charging stations installed on campus.
The University of Guelph is contributing $106,650 toward this project, for a total project value of $206,650.
Federal funding for this project is provided through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program as part of the government’s commitment to reach its ambitious target of 100 percent of passenger vehicle sales being of zero-emission vehicles by 2040.
The government has provided over $300 million to support the establishment of a coast-to-coast network of fast chargers as well as charging in more localized areas, such as apartment buildings, streets, and workplaces.
This investment also includes establishing natural gas refueling stations along key freight corridors and hydrogen stations in metropolitan centers.
The infrastructure resulting from these investments will ensure that people can drive and charge their vehicles across Canada. Support is also given for the demonstration of next-generation charging technologies as well as the development of enabling codes and standards.
The government continues to support green infrastructure projects that will create good jobs, advance Canada’s green future and help us achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Seamus O’Regan said: “We are providing greener options for Canadians to drive where they need to go. This is how we get to net-zero by 2050.”
Lloyd Longfield said: “Investments in green infrastructure are bringing us closer to a zero-emission future, in addition to helping Ontarians make greener choices, improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We are proud to support the University of Guelph’s efforts to provide students, employees, and residents with more options.”
Martha Harley, Vice-President (finance, administration and risk), University of Guelph, added: “The funding from Natural Resources Canada will allow us to provide anyone visiting campus with more green options to charge their vehicles and help us build on our commitment to being a leader in sustainable transportation solutions.” The Government of Canada remains committed to building a clean energy future to strengthen the economy, an official statement from Ottawa said.
