Government funding will help support Fugro Canada Corp in training employees
MISSISSAUGA — To help people recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for good jobs, the Ontario government is helping to train 26 workers in Mississauga so that they can gain the skills and expertise. Fugro Canada Corp is receiving $56,520 to help pay for the costs of training its employees.
The Canada-Ontario Job Grant provides employers up to $10,000 per worker that takes eligible training. For small employers and companies with less than 100 employees, the program can cover up to 83 per cent of the training costs. If they are training and hiring unemployed workers that coverage can rise to 100 per cent and up to $15,000 per unemployed worker who receives training. Larger companies (100 or more employees) can receive coverage for half of the training costs.
“This funding is an investment in the people of Mississauga and our local economy as we prepare for a post-pandemic economic recovery”, said Nina Tangri, MPP for Mississauga-Streetsville “Our government is helping businesses and workers manage the economic impacts of the pandemic and boosting upskilling and local jobs. This will help our community now and in the future.”
QCDMS (Quality, Cost, Delivery, Morale, Safety) will deliver the ‘Lean Green Belt’ training to 26 Furgo employees. This training was developed from the Toyota Production System methodology including, but not limited to – Six Sigma Principles, Project Management, Change Management and Strategic Thinking concepts that will give staff the skills needed to become more efficient with company processes. For example, employees will be able to identify the eight main areas of waste and endeavour as it relates to their work.
Using available resources, staff will learn about the importance of processes and will learn to identify the pain points within their systems, so they can improve operational inefficiencies. This is important to the organization because as a growing company, Furgo Canada would like to introduce developmental strategies that will increase staff productivity. Employees will learn how to decrease lead time in assigned tasks, which will provide them with more time for customer engagement.
“Training is essential to our economic success,” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “Through the this grant, we’re helping businesses provide their workers with the skills they need to stay competitive both now and in the future.”
Ontario’s 2021 Budget, Ontario’s Action Plan: Protecting People’s Health and Our Economy, includes measures to help workers and families recover from COVID-19 by investing an additional $614.3 million during 2020–21 and 2021–22 for employment and training supports, and proposing the new Ontario Jobs Training Tax Credit, a one-time credit that would provide up to $2,000 for workers who enroll in an eligible course or training program in 2021.
