Powerhouse three time (1988, 2002, 2010) former Champions Australia, one of the early favorites for ICC 2020 U19 Championship honors, inflicted a 9 wicket mauling on Canada when the two teams met in their January 15 Pre Tournament Warm Up encounter. An ultra aggressive 27 ball 94 by their number 3 batsman Oliver Davies, which included 11 sixes and 6 fours, provided the foundation for the Australians’ assault on the paltry 115 run victory target that had been set by the Canadians.
Having won the toss and deciding to bat, the Canadians were bundled out for just 114 off 41.5 overs. Eshan Sensarma top scored with a patient 27 made of 74 balls and there were only three other double digit scores from Mihir Patel (17), Udaybir Walia (16) and Nicholas Manohar (10) as the Canadians lost wickets regularly before eventually being dismissed for 114 in the 42nd over. Liam Scott 2/8 (4 overs) was Australia’s most successful bowler, while Corey Kelly 2/13 (4) and Todd Murphy 2/28 (8) were also among the wicket-takers.
Set to make 115 for victory off 50 overs at a required run rate of just 2.3 runs per over, Australia’s batters led by Oliver Davies made a mockery of the target, racing to 117/1 in just 7.4 overs. Davies’ 94 (27) was the backbone of the Australian reply. Ayush Verma 1/16 (1) was the only successful Canadian bowler.
