BRAMPTON: Premier Kathleen Wynne was in Brampton on Monday with MPP Harinder Malhi and Parminder Singh, MPP Candidate for Brampton East, to celebrate Sikh Heritage Month.
The Premier also wished nearly 200 people in attendance at the event at Shingar Banquet Hall early regards for a Happy Vaisakhi.

Wynne said: “I’m happy and proud to be here with you today to honour the heritage and traditions of a community that is so essential to Ontario’s vibrancy and prosperity. Thank you for your ongoing commitment.” The Premier then went into electioneering mode and spoke about the government’s “plan for fairness and to support care, create opportunity and make life more affordable during this period of economic change.”
The plan includes free prescription drugs for everyone under 25, and 65 or over, through the biggest expansion of medicine in a generation, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, and easier access to affordable child care, she said.
In Mississauga, Mayor Bonnnie Crombie raised the Sikh flag and tweeted: “#SikhHeritageMonth in Mississauga. Thank you for the profound contributions the Sikh community has made to make Mississauga strong and resilient.”
In Ottawa, the Sikh Heritage Month celebrations will be held on April 18.
Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath sent the following message: “As Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats, it is my pleasure to extend greetings and best wishes to Ontario’s Sikh community, as Ontario begins its fourth official Sikh Heritage Month.
“Since 2014, Sikh Heritage Month has given all Ontarians the opportunity to learn more about the proud history of the Sikh community, the important role they have played in building this great province, and the vibrant future they have here and around the world.
“…On behalf of Ontario’s New Democrats, I wish all Ontarians an inspiring and educational Sikh Heritage Month.
The Caledon Public Library will be hosting exhibitions, performances and workshops throughtou the month to celebrate Sikh Heritage and so is the Toronto District School Board.
