Partnership will mean first residential hospice in the city of Mississauga

December 17, 2019 (Mississauga, ON) – Today, Trillium Health Partners (THP) and Heart House Hospice (HHH) announced the site of a new health centre that will improve access to long-term and hospice palliative care for the people of Mississauga. Through this partnership, the future development will feature a 220-bed long-term care home, and a hospice centre that includes 10 residential beds and expanded space for community-based hospice programs.

Located at 2210 Speakman Drive in the Sheridan Park Corporate Centre, the new health centre is designed to ensure the people of Mississauga can access the health care services they need, in the most appropriate place, and within their own community. The development will include the first residential hospice in Mississauga. This announcement is part of the province’s commitment to create 15,000 new long-term care beds and redevelop 15,000 existing beds over five years.

The health centre is a multi-year project that will be developed in phases starting with long-term care (LTC) and hospice. The LTC home will feature seniors’-friendly resident design, virtual care and services such as dementia care and short-stay beds that will help transition patients out of hospital to receive care in the most appropriate place. The hospice centre will feature 10 residential suites, as well as expanded space for day programs, children’s programs and counselling services. Future phases will be developed to deliver services that people need to stay well in the community, including seniors’ day programs, family and specialist physician offices and independent living supports.

THP and HHH will work closely with neighbouring residents, local businesses, government partners, patients, families, and the people of Mississauga to ensure the new health centre meets the needs of the community for years to come. Details on upcoming community open houses will be shared in the coming weeks. Please visit for more information.

“Our government is taking swift action to deliver on our commitment to end hallway health care by creating and redeveloping long-term care beds in communities across Ontario, like right here in Mississauga. We are supporting this project—and many others like it across the province—as part of our mission to build a resident-centred long-term care system that provides Ontarians with the dignified, compassionate support they need, when and where they need it.”

Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister Long-Term Care

“Seniors will be able to enjoy all the comfort, privacy, and benefits of living at home at this new long-term care centre, while still receiving the best care possible. The inclusion of the first residential hospice in Mississauga shows the direction we’re moving in, towards a truly modern, connected health care system, that nurtures close partnerships between hospitals and home, community, and palliative care providers, and ensures that patients can receive the high quality care they expect and deserve.”

Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP, Mississauga-Lakeshore

“I’d like to congratulate Trillium Health Partners and Heart House Hospice on this tremendous milestone. As Honourary Chair of the Hospice Capital Campaign, this project is near and dear to my heart and has been years in the making. This innovative new health centre will not only support our city’s aging population but ensure that those approaching their final days can be cared for in their community in a way that is compassionate, dignified and feels more like home. Together, we will ensure that our growing city remains healthy and vibrant for generations to come.”

Bonnie Crombie, Mayor, City of Mississauga

“Trillium Health Partners and Heart House Hospice have been looking to expand services for seniors in our community for quite some time. I am excited to hear that the new location will be in Ward 2 and will be servicing our aging population and their families in Mississauga and beyond.”

Karen Ras, Ward 2 Councillor, City of Mississauga

“Heart House Hospice has been opening doors in our community for almost 35 years. Whether it’s the front door to our day programs or at the homes where we provide care, every door we open is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. We are very excited to be partnering with Trillium Health Partners and to share the location of our future hospice centre with the community today.”

Karen Priest, Board Chair, Heart House Hospice

“Together with our partners at Heart House Hospice, we are excited to build a wider community of care for the people of Mississauga, by extending a network of services out into the community where people can access them conveniently and efficiently. This partnership will enable seniors, the fastest growing population in Ontario, to age in the most appropriate place, and allow patients and families to stay in their own community to do so.”
