The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation organized its first Benefit Iftar with Faith of Life Network on June 1, 2017. It was an opportunity to introduce The Princess Margaret to the Muslim community during Ramadan. One hundred and fifty people attended the event at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, including community leaders and UHN staff members. The evening included speeches, a prayer and an evening reception to break the fast.
Dr. Hamid SlimiDuring the holy month of Ramadan, which started on May 26 and ends on June 24, Muslims are encouraged to give generously to charities and practice fasting from dawn to sunset. Following a Call to Prayer and Maghrib prayer led by Imam Dr. Hamid Slimi, iftar was served to break the daily fasting. A meeting room on the 8th floor of the Cancer Centre was transformed into a prayer room.
Pasha Restaurant has generously provided food catering for the event. The event began with welcoming remarks by Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, followed by a presentation by Dr. Fayez Quereshy, Surgical Oncologist and Lower Gastrointestinal Site Group Lead of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and speeches by Irfan Saleemi and Dr. Slimi. In the spirit of Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to contribute with what we can to the society.
Faith of Life Network is proud to support The Princess Margaret for its important work on cancer research and clinical care. I also shared a message of hope and while life is not perfect, we can make it excellent. says Dr. Slimi. The Faith of Life Network and its Founder and President, Dr. Slimi, have donated $100,000 to The Princess Margaret since 2015. A pledge was made at the event with an additional $150,000 towards the Space Transformation Campaign.
