OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday greeted the Indo-Canadian community on the occasion of India’s Independence Day.
In a statement, Trudeau said, “Canada and India have a strong, longstanding, and vibrant relationship built on our shared traditions of democracy and pluralism, and deep cultural and people-to-people ties. The over one million Canadians of Indian heritage have made – and continue to make – many important contributions to our country.”
“Canada and India work closely together in international organizations including the UN, the Commonwealth, and the World Trade Organization. We look forward to deepening our partnership in important areas like trade and investment, education and
skills training, science and innovation, and climate change….
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I send best wishes to all who are celebrating India’s Independence Day.”
Premiers of Ontario and Alberta also issued messages, while Minister of Public Services and
Procurement Anita Anand joined in singing India’s national anthem at a virtual event in her Oakville constituency.
In Ottawa, a flag-hoisting ceremony was held by High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria; similar
functions were and also held at the Indian consulates in Toronto and Vancouver. Special meals were distributed in Ottawa.
A series of car rallies were organized in Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, and Brampton.
In addition to the illumination of the Niagara Falls, the Indian flag was also raised at Toronto’s City Hall, while the three-dimensional Toronto sign in the City was lit in Indian flag colours, as was the iconic CN Tower.
